Academics
Strong Academics. No Shortcuts.
Fundamentals first. Then we teach children how to use what they know.
Reading, writing, mathematics, science and social studies remain at the heart of a Catalyx education. Before children can confidently lead, create, communicate or solve bigger problems, they need a strong academic foundation.

- Confidence
Grades 3 – 5
Apply & Expand
As academic skills become stronger, students increasingly use what they know to solve problems, create projects, collaborate and present their thinking.
- Advanced reading & writing
- Mathematical reasoning
- Science & social studies
- Research
- Problem-solving

- Presentations
- Five Pillars in practice
Core subjects
The Subjects That Matter Most Still Matter Most
Core subject
Reading
Students develop fluency, vocabulary, comprehension, critical thinking, and the ability to understand increasingly complex texts.
- Phonics

Core subject
Mathematics
Students develop strong number sense, computation skills, mathematical reasoning, problem-solving, and confidence working with numbers.
- Number sense
- Computation
- Reasoning
- Problem-solving
Core subject
Science
Students explore the natural world through observation, questions, experiments, evidence, and hands-on investigation.

These subjects are not secondary to the Five Pillars. They are the academic foundation that makes the Five Pillars possible.
How the pillars help
The Five Pillars Strengthen the Fundamentals
Catalyx does not divide the school day into “traditional academics” and “future skills.” Whenever appropriate, the Five Pillars give students additional ways to practice and use what they are already learning.
-
Reading + Communication
A student reads a story, identifies the main idea, and explains it to classmates.
-
Math + Financial Literacy
A student practices addition and subtraction through a simple saving-and-spending activity.
-
Writing + Entrepreneurship
A student writes a description of a product or idea they created.
-
Science + Innovation
Students learn a science concept, then design a simple solution around it.
-
Group Projects + Leadership
Students practice responsibility, listening, teamwork and decision-making while completing academic work together.
The goal is not to add more subjects. It is to make academic learning more useful and memorable.
Measuring progress
Parents Should Know How Their Child Is Progressing
Catalyx plans to use regular academic assessment, classroom performance, teacher observation and student work to understand progress throughout the year. Parents should receive clear information about areas such as:
- Reading growth
- Writing development
- Math mastery
- Classroom performance
- Learning habits
- Areas needing additional attention
Innovation should never make academic progress harder to measure. Parents should have a clear understanding of how their child is doing.
Preparation for middle school
The goal is bigger than fifth grade.
Our goal is for every Catalyx graduate to leave fifth grade academically prepared for the demands of middle school — with strong reading, writing, mathematics, study habits, communication skills, confidence and independence. The Five Pillars are an advantage only if students first possess the academic foundation to succeed wherever they go next.
Academic leadership
Built With Experienced Elementary Educators
Catalyx's academic program is being developed with a strong understanding of how elementary-aged children learn — especially during the critical early years when reading, writing, mathematics, language and learning habits are established.
Before Catalyx asks children to build, lead, innovate or present, we make sure they have the academic foundation to succeed.
